How to Use the Calculator

Technology Notes:

  1. You must have a current web browser to use the DCMASSC. Javascript must be enabled (turned on). See your browser's Help function for details. The Calculator works with Firefox/Netscape, Internet Explorer and Safari (Mac) browsers.
  2. Once you begin using the Calculator, submit entered information and move to the next page by clicking once on the "Save and Continue" button at the bottom of the page. Move backward without entering and submitting information by clicking on the navigation bar at the top of the DCMASSC page. You may also use the "back" button in the upper left hand corner of your Internet browser.
  3. Do not use dollar signs ($) or commas (,) when entering numbers.
  4. Underlined words are links which will take you from the Calculator to information pages.
  5. The DCMASSC does not save information; copies of each page can be printed, using your browser's print function, before the DCMASSC is closed. You can print your Budget Report and Eligibility Report by clicking on the "Print" button at the bottom of the page. You will likely wish to print:
    • Budget Report
    • Eligibility Report
    • Benefits information pages
    • Career/Job information pages

  • Have a monthly budget and income information on hand while using the Calculator. The DCMASSC can create a Budget Report and Eligibility Report without all of the information it asks for, but results will be less reliable.
  • Counselors who use the DCMASSC should ask clients to bring necessary information to meetings.
  • Consider practicing using the Calculator before using it in earnest.
  • Look for update dates on information pages before assuming information to be current.
  • Remember that numbers within the Budget and Eligibility Reports and eligibility results are suggestions; actual eligibility, benefit values and Tax credits values can only be determined by federal, state and local agencies and service providers. Be sure to contact service providers if you suspect you may be eligible or have questions regarding benefits and taxes.
