Bench as the anti-focal point. Similar to the previous picture two benches on either side of this table guarantee the attention is to what's outside the windows. These benches do a perfect job of "going away" — to be used only when needed.
As a divider. In an open floor plan creating small zones can give a room a more orderly feeling and be a more efficient use of space. Bordering a seating group or TV nook with a bench helps define that zone without creating a visual wall that might shrink the space. Plus a backless bench can be used from any direction allowing it to bridge different seating areas (or become an additional table for snacks or festive supplies).
